Sharon Kerr – Poise & Presents
Sharon Kerr is the owner of Poise & Presents
I asked Sharon, owner of Poise & Presents to tell me a little about herself and she said,” My name is Sharon Kerr I’m mum to a precious little girl, Darcy who is 9 and wife to Joe we’re married 22 years this September coincidentally on the 1st anniversary of my business commencing trading. Artistic talents are in both my maternal and paternal families. So my artistic genes come from generations before me. I’m delighted to say my little girl holds the same gene. I have always drawn, painted or written in one form or another since my childhood. I always encourage people to try sketching. We all have the ability it just needs to be teased out of us.
How did Sharon Start her Business?
Poise & Presents was born out of encouragement from a friend. My Friend saw I had artistic talents. I was encouraged me to find an outlet for those talents and start a business. My small business is part-time. I work from home and I started from scratch with a couple of pounds in my pocket. I saw something on the internet one day, sent off for some faux flowers and tried to make my own version. What I created looked more like the top tier of a wedding cake. I thought “could this be something to create and save couples on a tight wedding budget some money?” I then started to look at what else could I create thinking totally outside the box. Using my skills, I love to create beautiful yet meaningful arrangements.
The best thing that I’ve taken from the whole process is I’ve shown my little girl that with an idea, hard work and belief you can be a woman in business and make a success of yourself. I love the fact that I get to create something that plays a small part in people’s life events. The product is also a keepsake for them. Meeting customers is one of the nicest parts that never fails to disappoint. I pride myself on two things, attention to detail and great customer service. This is illustrated in the reviews from satisfied customers.”
Where is Sharon based?
Sharon is based in Glengormley and has collection points in Newtownabbey and Belfast, although her smaller items can be posted with P&P charges.
More about Poise & Presents
I asked Sharon to describe her business and she said, “Poise and Presents is a business where I create bespoke faux floral arrangements for most occasions in life. I specialise in wrist corsages and buttonholes for School Formals, weddings, day at the races or gala ball. It’s a bespoke service where I create faux floral arrangements that are tailored to your needs be that an occasion that requires a gift or an event where you require an arrangement to wear to compliment your clothing.”
Why Sharon loves her job
Sharon told me how she loves her job, “Creating beautiful arrangements and meeting people, what’s not to like. I love how I get lost when creating. I go where the flowers take me and that brings all sorts of benefits to my own mental well being. The other lovely thing is seeing customers faces when I meet them. When they see their order, the smiles say it all. Of course when they send photos of the occasion featuring their arrangement that’s just lovely to see. I love to be creative. I use a combination of arts and crafts with faux flowers to create the unusual. It’s not something easily explained you – just have to make what you imagine.
My customers vary from a little child at a Fayre with just a few pounds to purchase something lovely for mum, to a couple getting married on a budget and wanting an affordable wedding cake topper to give them the bling they otherwise couldn’t afford. My biggest sellers are my wrist corsages and ideally they are ordered by those attending School Formals, weddings, day at the races or gala dinners.”
What would Sharon change about her business?
When asked what she would change about her business, she said,
“I wish I had the room and money to create all the ideas that I have in my mind, but I’m a believer in that old adage “if it’s for you it won’t pass you by”, so with hard work and determination that may well come in the future.”
Sharon’s advice for others starting out in business:
Sharon’s advice for someone who is thinking of starting their own business is “Trust your gut instincts. This is the one key piece of advice I’d give anyone, I always have before I started my small business and it has never let me down. Things will fall into place when they are ready to. Any failures are just opportunities to learn so learn from them.”
What does Sharon like to do in her spare time? “I love to create so when I do get spare time either to myself or with my little girl I like to express myself through arts and crafts. It’s so very therapeutic. The other thing that I like to do but with our weather don’t get the chance to do often enough is to go fly a kite. It’s liberating and such a simple thing. It shows how against all the elements something so simple can battle it’s way through and soar a bit like a woman in business.”
Sharon is a valuable member of The MAW Network and always is willing to give advice to other members.
