Biography

Hello ladies, thought now I had more time on my hands, I should take this opportunity to re-introduce myself! I’m Jill Gordon, and would describe myself as a bit of a perfectionist, too compassionate but witty on occasions with a bit of madness thrown in. My favourite thing to do in life is laugh (usually at myself). I love reading, tidying things and eating.

This year, I launched MindSafe at Work to help ease the frustration I felt surrounding mental well-being in the workplace. I have supported a large number of people struggling with their mental health in the workplace.  I could clearly see the little things that could have made such a big difference for them at the time, with most of the issues coming from a lack of empathy, understanding and awareness from managers or HR.

Over the period of about 18 months – 1 year, I researched and studied what I could provide to help. As quite a practical person, it had to have rules and regulations behind it (I’m a bit of a health and safety freak too). What came naturally to me and made sense was the combination of my passion to support people with mental health problems and illness, and Health and Safety Management Standards. These two things gave me a foundation to design and develop services for a business of any size. The most important service I provide is a mental well-being risk assessment.

The risk assessment is absolutely vital in terms of managing and controlling stress at work. I believe in a preventative approach and early intervention is key.

The biggest issue for me in terms of my business is that most people just pay lip service to the mental well-being of their staff. If I could run down Royal Avenue naked, just to get people to finally realise mental health MUST be treated as equally as physical health in the workplace, I would.

This is what drives and motivates me. The lack of parity between the two. I want all employers in Northern Ireland to take mental health seriously.

As well as MindSafe at Work, I am an ASIST trainer. (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training). Not only do I train others to intervene in a suicide crisis, but I am quite involved in suicide prevention as well as intervention myself. All workplaces in NI should have people trained in ASIST.

I love what I do and feel grateful to be in the position I am. I think this is always reflected in my work, whether that be a training session for managers, or a one to one with a client. I am excited about what the future holds for both myself and my business!!
