Bronagh Duffin is the owner of Bakehouse – Below is her story:

For as long as I can remember my life has always been about food.  My first cookery book was Delia Smiths Complete Cookery Course and as I child I read it cover to cover before I went to sleep dreaming of how I would love to cook these amazing dishes. I believe such strong memories are associated with food that it is so important.  It has the power to nourish the body and mind and transport us to a place of contentment and happiness.

One of my favourite memories is of me as a child eating my Grannies freshly baked scones, dripping in butter and feeling happy and safe at that time.  For me food heals and comforts in so many ways whether it’s through selecting ingredients, cooking it for those you love or eating it and for that reason I never want to stop learning about new ingredients, recipes and ways to teach people to love it as much as I do.

My desire is to cook delicious, simple and home-made food. This website is how I reflect my love for food and whether it be recipes, classes, parties or stunning celebration cakes I want to help others to enjoy cooking and eating delicious food.  I hope you enjoy it and that you find something which interests you.

Biographical Info

At an early age of 7 I fell in love with baking thanks to an Aunt of mine and God help my parents when I think of the ‘masterpieces’ they had to swallow! I decided in 2009 to make this a part time business as my children had all left home and my grandchildren were arriving and required christening and birthday cakes. In 2014 I retired from the I.T world and went full time into Cakes. I have a Phd in Business & Finance but my love of catering was always in the background and my degrees have held me in good stead in every walk of my life, cake making just one as Marketing is essential. I am 6o years old and have 4 children and seven grandchildren, so you are never too old to follow your dreams or start again

What you specialise in – Wedding Cakes, Special Occasion Cakes, Chocolatier

Where you are based Home Based in Magherafelt

What you love about your job I love creating a cake that fulfill a Bride’s vision, be it on a smaller or large scale than they had desired as budget usually comes into play, however it is always possible to give a bride her dream cake on some scale.

Also what problems you solve for people if applicable, Making their dream cake or cakes fit their budget, there is always a way.

Biographical Info

I am originally from Dublin and am married to Mark and we have 5 sons.

I trained and worked as a chef in Dublin, Isle of Man, and Northern Ireland. Due to Arthritis however I had to give up my work, so took some time off to raise my family. I went back to college when my youngest was one and did a Foundation degree, Bsc Food Technology Degree and have taken time out from my Msc In Business Communications to become Self Employed.

I now run Healthy Eating and Cooking workshops in the community, schools and hoping to get into the business world in the future. I love what I do and get great satisfaction from seeing how my clients confidence grows everytime they come to one of my workshops.

I work with children from 3 up, teenagers, Mens groups, women, older peoples groups. I also do one to ones and am currently helping a disabled girl become more independant so she can eventually move out of her parents home. I love advising people on how to make better choices when they are shopping, cooking and eating and my overall ainm is to improve the health and well being of all my clients.

Being Self employed has many challenges and a lot of sleepless nights but I think that being positive and getting the support that I get from Mums at Work has helped me so much knowing that other women are all going through the same things and we are all in the same boat. Hopefully the next 6 months will not be as hard as the last but I am staying positive knowing that I have all the support from my family and friends.
